How Did the Authors of Dangerous Attraction Find Success?

Author Jill Sanders didn’t know if she’d be able to make a living writing. But, she had to try after she and her family left everything they had in Colorado behind them to relocate close to her mother-in-law, who wasn’t doing well physically. The decision did mean leaving behind paying jobs, friends and their home…everything. Their debt was overwhelming, and they struggled for three years to make ends meet so they could be with family. Jill’s twin sister encouraged her to self-publish her writing. “In July of last year two of my books hit Amazon's top 100 lists for Romance, and I felt like I'd hit the lottery. I remember doing a dance with my husband and teenage boys, who turned around and told me to never do that again as they laughed,” says Sanders, who is now fully entrenched as one of Amazon’s most successful romantic suspense writers.

Lori Ryan had a similar experience. “I looked at my book sales one day and just turned to my husband and grinned. The sales had shot up overnight and just kept climbing throughout the day.” Ryan says the writing is about more than the money, although that does help support her shopping habit. “That weekend, I heard from so many readers; they loved the books and wanted more! There’s no better feeling than hearing from your readers and getting to connect with them one-on-one,” says Ryan.

Dana Marton wrote for thirteen years before signing with a traditional publisher and is now a hybrid author – one who writes for both a traditional publishing house and as a self-published author. For Marton, a big reason she began publishing as an indie author was the fact that she had stories to tell that the publishers didn’t want. Her Broslin Creek Series didn’t fit the mold of what the big publishers were looking for so she put it out there herself. It seems to have fit her readers’ mold. Deathscape quickly reached the number one spot in Romantic Suspense on Amazon when it was released.

What does it take to be successful in the indie world? Rebecca York advises authors to “be prepared to write a lot of books, visibility is everything. And, don’t skip the editing process.” The other authors on the project wholeheartedly agreed. Sharon Hamilton recommends finding strong mentors and Marie Astor tells aspiring writers to give away a book for free. “There are thousands of authors for readers to choose from. Offering a free book gave me a wonderful opportunity to introduce myself as an author,” says Astor.

“You’re hurting,” he reminded her, reading entirely too much into her confession. “I’m here and you have a wounded heart, a torn soul. I can’t heal you, Kara.”

How did he tell her he didn’t want to heal her? How did he explain that while he wanted to kiss it and make it better, curing her wasn’t on his mind. He wanted to claim her. And if claimed her, he fully intended to keep her.

How did a man tell a woman that?

She took a step toward him. He took one step back. She shot him this funny little look, crossed her arms, and for a minute, he could’ve sworn she was about to strip her shirt over her head.

He willed her to stop even though his body had already reached a decision, drawn all conclusions.

One touch and she was his. One gesture to indicate she fully intended to invite him to stay and he would give in to the long awaited temptation, the attraction he could not deny.

She moved toward him again, taking three short calculated steps as if she had deliberately analyzed the best way to separate their distance just as she’d done earlier when they’d been downstairs on her sofa.

“I can’t take his place, Kara. I can’t make the hurt go away.”

“You can try.”
