As I’m sitting here contemplating what to write about for the blog post, my mind begins to drift. And suddenly I’m thinking about characters. More specifically, types of characters and why we love them. Since I can’t speak for the rest of you, I’ll just give you all some insight into me and what makes me fall hard.
For me, it’s all about authenticity. I need a character who’s real. I don’t mean like burping and farting real. I mean real in the sense of personality. People out here in the big bad world are not perfect. Nor do they walk around everyday making precision choices with one hundred percent accuracy. Instead, your average person is stumbling around, doing the best they can to make sense of their lives. Most of us are messy. We have messy houses. We have messy lives. Oh, not all the time—but occasionally.
My characters are just like the rest of us. They struggle to see clearly sometimes. They have pasts that they’d rather forget parts of. They have memories that still make them feel totally embarrassed when they pop to mind.
Most importantly, they have real fears that aren’t always based in logic. Because, come on, how many of us have completely rational fears—whatever they are? I know I don’t.
My point is that my characters are flawed and human, just like the rest of us. And sometimes they do things that make you feel frustrated and annoyed—just like family. And just like family, at the end of the day you love them like crazy because they have hearts of gold. Even if they’re sometimes tarnished.
