Aromatherapy to heal a shifter?

Devin, the hero of Beautiful Mistake, is a three hundred year old feline shifter suffering from mental illness. Because of the trauma he experienced as a child, he suffers from blackouts and must constantly keep his aggressive inner animals from lashing out at every threat whether real or imagined. Shifter Affairs, the division of the human government that deals with shifter related problems, has been trying for years to help abused shifters overcome their problems, but trying to heal both man and beast has proven nearly impossible. Still, the humans who’ve dedicated their lives to protecting shifters refuse to give up. They’ve tried counseling, drugs and hypnosis. None of those treatments worked.

When all options are exhausted, the abused victims, mostly women and children rescued from trafficking rings and experimental facilities, are handed over to the shifters and placed in ‘Evaluation Centers’ to assure they can control their animals. Most never leave.

Devin has so far avoided being committed to one of the hellish centers, but a rescue mission to recover a kidnapped child might have given him the cure he never thought he’d find—personalized aromatherapy.

For a shifter, how something smells is extremely important. Like a true animal, they can use a scent trail to track someone. And from the variations in a person’s scent, they can also determine if someone is lying, afraid or aroused. Drug use and sickness can alter our personal fragrance too. Scents can offer them endless amounts of information and just as we have our favorite smells, so do shifters. In Beautiful Mistake, Devin finds his and her name is Lena.
