Guest Blog & Giveaway - Wild West Succubus by Lila Shaw

~~~~~GUEST POST BY LILA SHAW~~~~~
Cowboys and Demons and Gargoyles, Oh My!
Most westerns are full of rugged cowboys, gunslingers, gamblers, heart of gold harlots, prim librarians and schoolteachers, all eeking out a living as best they can in the harsh historical west. Most. Definitely not all.
Wild West Succubus pulls the reader into 1869 Kansas as its urban fantasy playground, where supernatural good guys and bad guys duke it out under the radar.
The heroine of Wild West Succubus, Priscilla, is, as the title suggests, a succubus. She is the sort of demon who preys on human males because she needs sex to survive. She's also the owner of the Flying P ranch.
Priscilla meets her match in Hugo, a gargoyle. Is he a shifter? No. But he is a protector of mankind and he does have some supernatural abilities. Picture those terrifying beasts guarding Notre Dame from the rooftop. Hugo performs the same function but he's human...mostly...and much, much more handsome that his stone namesakes.
Other than her own maker, Priscilla is fairly ignorant of all the various types of demons roaming the wild west. Until Hugo shows up and educates her. One of the first demons she meets under his tutelage is a vishnaranja. Okay, I'll confess that I totally made that one up. As its name implies, it is an orange beast, full of fangs and claws and a voracious appetite.
Surprisingly, Priscilla hasn't even heard of shifters or vampires either. Hugo gives her a working introduction to a nasty .
The most terrifying demon in the story is Priscilla's maker. We are never told what he is, but Priscilla and Hugo have every reason to be afraid of him. And that's all I'll say about "Jim" to keep from spoiling the story.
Who knows what other demons Hugo has slain in his past. Perhaps we'll find out in a future book?? It's not out of the question.  :)
Here's more about Wild West Succubus, my paranormal western historical romance with touches of urban fantasy in an anything but urban setting:
***
Blurb:
A woman damned…
Priscilla Goodnight, a widow in the harsh Kansas frontier, has a cattle ranch to run. She can’t afford to reveal any cracks in her tough exterior or indulge in sexual liaisons with her ranch hands. But a hungry succubus can only exercise so much self-restraint, making discretion, disguise and memory-wiping her top managerial skills.
The mysterious stranger who knows her darkest secret…
Priscilla doesn’t remember hiring the man with the wily smile and the flannel voice. At all. Men as physically appealing as Hugo Desmond rarely escape her bed, let alone her memory. And how is he able to move so fast, yet nobody notices but her?
Is she his target, his mission or his bait?
Hugo is a gargoyle—a specially-trained executioner—sent to purge the west of evil. With succubi falling squarely in demon territory, Priscilla has every reason to fear him … yet she can’t stay away. Hugo says he needs her help and wants to save her soul. But is redemption possible for a woman as wicked as Priscilla, or will love thaw her heart just enough for Hugo to crush it?
Book Description:
To be together is dangerous. To stay apart is impossible.
Firefighter Jasmine Mackinnon has always just been one of the guys. So no one’s more shocked than she is to find herself kissing fellow firefighter and all-around sinfully handsome playboy Aaron Parkes after a friend’s wedding. Jasmine knows she can’t risk an emotional connection with a colleague—a potentially dangerous entanglement when fighting fires together—and nothing's more important to her than her job.
Aaron never noticed how beautiful Jasmine was until he saw her out of her firefighter duds, but there’s something about the fiery woman that tempts him. Though he knows pursuing a real relationship is out of the question for a serial dater like him, when their casual flirtation builds into something more serious, it's not just their jobs or their safety on the line. It's their hearts.
~~~~~EXCERPT~~~~~

Jasmine awoke, surprised that she’d managed to sleep at all, with a raging thirst thanks to downing enough champagne to float a small sailing boat. Well, not so much in truth, but way more than she was used to, and enough to give her a pounding head and make her swear to stay away from Zoe at any future parties Leanne might throw.
As she drank her third glass of water, the full horror of the kiss returned to her with appalling clarity. Aaron might have kissed her first, but she had flung herself at him.
Groaning, she bent over till her forehead met the countertop with a satisfying clunk. But it wasn’t satisfying enough, so she lifted it and let it drop again. And again. How could she have been such an idiot? Of all the dimwits in the world, she was the award-winning, cake-taking number one of all time.
For pity’s sake, if she’d had to lose control, why couldn’t it have been with someone else? Someone she didn’t work with. Someone she didn’t hold in such contempt—outside of work, that was. She had nothing but respect for him as a fellow firefighter. His private life was another matter entirely.
Aaron knew how she felt about his lifestyle; he could hardly be unaware, since she’d made it as clear as she possibly could during the time they’d worked together. And she’d been equally critical of the women who fell for his charm—the charm she’d always claimed to find unfathomable. Now, she’d behaved no better than a woman he’d picked up in a pub.

Chapter One

Lost in the wild

Captive by circumstance…

Endangered

He had no flaw. The character hated swimming, a permissible preference, otherwise he was strong, dark, mysterious, a whiz with technology, compassionate, and smoking hot. More than all of that, she ached to save him. After years of servitude hacking U.S. GPS drone systems for the Iranian military, he’d broken away by selling Intel to the American government. Finally able to enjoy his first vacation, he was in a bus crash, then later abandoned by the other survivors.
She could save him, restore his faith in humanity, on her knees or bent over a table, which for most men would inspire just fine. She saw no limit to the possibilities in smoothing the ever-present worry lines from his brow.

Ever obsessing about the show with her friends was one thing. After it aired, they’d all bed their boyfriends, even Frank, and through squinted eyes fantasize the cock in them belonged to their television lover. Siler didn’t have that outlet, hadn’t had it for ages. The girls all thought her lack of mate some prudish nod to morality, or deep-seated insecurity. They didn’t know she’d enjoyed raucous sexual freedom in her younger years. No, she didn’t have men at her door in droves now, but not for lack of trying on their part. Her dedication to becoming a federal public defender, however thankless, and saving the unsavable eradicated any hope of a personal life.

Yes, she missed the regularity of a thorough dicking, but it had always come at a high price, one she refused to pay again. Through her twenties, casual sex had been fine, fun, even. But a thirty-year-old bar hopper was just sad, and at thirty-two, after shallow dalliances with a string of Mr. Wrongs, she’d given up.

A year and a half ago.

Being drawn into Endangered proved the perfect Prozac. Her spirits lifted. The relief of not looking for Mr. Right left her free to focus on her caseload, to connect with her clients—society’s castoffs—and try to fulfill her purpose of helping others. Sexual needs became muted, manageable with the right tools—for the most part. Occasionally her body ached for release under someone else’s touch, and in her mind he always had an olive complexion, not to mention agile fingers masterfully working her clit.

Every time, she closed her eyes, she saw Farraj. His face above hers, lips parted in a moan. His lean, hard body moving over, around, in her. His rolling, rich accent asking, “Like this?”

And why wouldn’t it be him? Fantasy gave better than the womanizing pricks her social circle presented. As a well-off single woman, no pressure urged her to find a mate, materially, or even socially. Siler could hold out for the hot love she wanted, and despite how insane, how irrational, she wanted Farraj Reza. Only one avenue presented itself to get him.

The only way to save her life is to resurrect the dead…

Julian Darke was only a newborn when he was abandoned on the doorstep of a gentleman doctor. Though raised with love, he is driven to discover his true origins.

Nellie Barchester doesn’t recognize the scarred, disfigured stranger in the mirror. Though the gifted doctor and engineer has done his best to repair the damage, scars ravage her body, and chill her soul with the realization that her own husband may have plotted her death.

Julian’s tenderness is a balm to her soul, and Nellie is drawn to the edge of passion by a man not repelled by her deformities. But as their pursuit of the truth draws them into London’s underbelly, they cross the path of a ruthless enemy who will stop at nothing to fulfill his schemes.

Excerpt

Gripping her upper arms, he pulled her closer. “Nellie, why won’t you tell me everything you know about Sir Thaddeus? Why the devil are you still protecting him after everything you’ve suffered? Why?”
Instead of crumpling into tears, as he’d half-feared, she braced herself against his hold, her eyes flashing with green fire. “Protecting him! I’m doing nothing of the sort. I loathe and despise Sir Thaddeus. I curse him with every last breath in my body.” The ragged hoarseness of her voice left him in no doubt of her feelings.
“Ah, so you admit to knowing him, at least.”
“Yes, all right. I do know him, though I wish to God I’d never laid eyes on him.” She paused, her throat working as she swallowed convulsively. “He is a bully, a thug, a monster. He will stop at nothing to get his way.”
Julian felt her tremble in his arms, saw tears spring to her eyes. She’d been such a pillar of fortitude, but here she was on the brink of breaking down. A delayed reaction, he thought. Nothing to be concerned about. But the physician in him could not control his other, less noble urges. He slid his arms around her and held her in a loose embrace.
“He wanted you dead, Nellie,” he murmured. “Why was that? What did you do that drove him to such lengths?”
Gulping, she shook her head, emotion robbing her of speech. In an effort to comfort her, he found himself rubbing her back in slow circular motions, and the feel of her body through the soft fabric of her dress sent a tingling warmth shooting through him.
“I’m sorry for distressing you,” he said. “I thought you might be ready to talk, but I see—”
“No, you’re not distressing me.” His nostrils filled with her scent—almond oil and citrus and femininity. She sniffed and dashed the heel of her hand against her damp eyes. “It’s just…I go to pieces whenever I think of what that brute did to me, and—and I’m reminded every time I catch a glimpse of myself in a mirror…” Her fingers scraped over the track marks on her cheeks. “I’m a freak, an abomination—”
“Don’t say such things. Do you hear me? I won’t have you debasing yourself like that.”
“I can’t help it.”
“Would you rather I’d left you to die out there? Would you?”
“I don’t know. Perhaps it would have been better.”
“I can’t believe you’re saying that.”
“But look at me. I’m a creature of the shadows. People shy away from me at the first glimpse of my face.”
“Do I shy away from you?” He held her by the shoulders and forced her to look at him. “Well, Nellie, do I?”
She chewed on her lower lip, frowning. “No, but…but you’re a doctor. You’re used to seeing deformities.”
He sighed, his attention caught by the generous swell of her lip beneath her white teeth. The tingling warmth spread through his entire body, coalescing in his loins. “I am a doctor, yes, but I am also a man, and when I look at you I see a strong, vibrant young woman who has much to live for.”
Nellie gave a dry laugh. “Thank you, Doctor. I know you’re only trying to lift my spirits, but thank you anyway.”
“You think I’m dissembling?” Impatience and desire stirred his blood. How could she be so blind? Before he knew what he was doing, he slid his hands up and cupped her face. Her lips parted in surprise. Emotion overpowering self-denial, he lowered his head and pressed his lips against hers. He’d intended to give her just a friendly buss, but the soft generosity of her mouth ambushed him. Heat flared through him.
Trailing his lips over her cheeks, he dropped kisses over her cicatrix, eager to memorise every bump and dip, but she instantly jerked her head away.
“Don’t, I beg of you. Please, stop.”
